About

We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

IAG Film Shorts has its early roots in 2016, when a group of geographers at the University of Melbourne realised they were each incorporating film and video in their academic practice in different ways. Since then, each of our filmic practices - and the wider practices of the discipline - have grown, and we began to experiment with spaces to discuss, learn from and celebrate each others’ work and ideas, including at conferences, workshops and public screening events.

In 2021, we decided to organise IAG Film Shorts as a regular session at the Institute of Australian Geographers Annual Conference. Fluid in format, we imagined it would contribute to growing interest and ongoing conversations around filmmaking amongst geographers in the region. Inspired by film festivals and cognate events abroad such as those organised by www.filmgeographies.com, we invite submissions of short films made by geographers around the world, with the aim of providing a platform for geographical filmmaking, contributing to ongoing skills-building and inspiring further practices of geographical film - including our own.

We invite submissions all year around, and selected films are screened in person at the IAG Annual Conference and, where filmmakers permit, archived at this website for viewing and teaching.

IAG Film Shorts is organised by Vickie Zhang, Lisa Palmer and Jane Dyson. Get in touch with us if you are interested to learn more or be involved.
